Because of our hectic lifestyles, most of us live our lives in 'fight or flight' mode and harmful hormones are constantly being dumped into our bloodstream. The goal is to tap into your parasympathetic nervous system which is the 'calm and relax' mode. It slows our body down which in turn allows restoration and rejuvenation. The key to activating the parasympathetic nervous system is to place your full attention on your breath.
Close your eyes and allow your breath to slow down, relax and become calm. Now slowly take a wonderful, deep breath in, hold it for a moment and then concentrate on your exhale. When you exhale you can expect two things to happen. A good long slow exhale will expel stagnant air from the bottom of your lungs along with the toxic byproducts that the body has produced. A good exhale can help you release worries and heavy thoughts, letting go emotionally and physically.
What does that have to do with Bowen Therapy?
Bowen has 2 amazing procedures to help you improve your breathing. So if you find that you are a shallow breather, or someone who finds taking a deep breath uncomfortable or impossible, please give me a call. I would love to help you!
This is a good explanation and illustration of how the lungs, ribs and diaphragm work together with each breath you take.
