If that muscle weakens or relaxes abnormally, stomach acid can flow back up into your esophagus and cause heart burn, also known as acid reflux. Certain foods and drinks can trigger heartburn in some people including spicy foods, onions, tomato products, fatty or fried foods and consuming large fatty meals. Being overweight or pregnant can increase your risk of experiencing heartburn.
The lining of your esophagus was not made to withstand the powerful acid in your stomach which can cause serious damage.
What can you do to help yourself? Try lifestyle changes to control your symptoms until you see your doctor. For instance, avoid foods that trigger your heartburn, avoid eating at least 2 hours before bedtime and avoid lying down right after any meal. You can elevate the head of your bed if you experience heartburn when you go to bed at night. Also, maintain a healthy weight and avoid wearing tight fitting clothes that put pressure on your abdomen.
